How to set up bereavement leave
Bereavement leave (also known as compassionate leave) is typically an amount of leave that can be taken for each instance of death or life-threatening injury to an immediate family member. It is an example of a type of leave that does not accrue, cannot be paid out and is therefore not a financial entitlement that can be accounted-for in advance. It occurs on an ad-hoc basis and cannot be predicted or scheduled.
Setting up a pay item for leave that does not accrue (such as bereavement leave)
- Create a pay item to represent payment of this type of leave
- Use any code you like e.g. BEREAVE
- It will be a type of INCOME, and usually paid at the employee’s normal rate of pay
- Payment type will be Paid Leave - Other
- Set the pay item to accrue leave such as Annual, Personal and Long Service Leave (if applicable)
- Use this pay item on a pay run any time you need to record an employee’s payment for bereavement leave
Important: the above are guidelines and recommendations only. You should always check with your relevant industrial guidelines to ensure it is set up the way you need it to calculate.
