Why is it slow to bring up a print dialogue box?
Overview
Occasionally, you may find that printing reports or opening the Printers manager (Users > Printers) causes your system to freeze for several minutes before displaying the Print Dialogue box.
This can be due to an excessive number of printer definitions in the Windows Registry.
Accentis will contact each of these devices in preparation for any one of them being selected, which results in a “not responding” status until every device is ready to print. If some of these connections are stale, this can take quite some time.
Solution
To resolve this issue, you will need access to the Windows System Registry. You must have authority and understanding of the Windows registry before making any changes.
Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Devices
Clear out all connected devices in this location. Log out and back in again to trigger fresh connections to all of your devices.
NOTE: This solution will only affect the current user. If multiple users are experiencing the issue, you will need to either resolve this issue for each user or ask your IT team to implement the following permanent solution.
Involving your IT crew
If you want to resolve the issue automatically for all users, your IT team can implement the above change script on logoff of each user. Contact your IT team for assistance with this.
FAQs
No. When you log in to Accentis, a fresh list of registered printers is generated. This means that any printer you need will be ready to go every time you log in. This is why the “logoff script” from your IT team will work – all old connections will be cleared when you log out, and new connections will be made when you log in.
All printers will still be accessible, as both of these solutions simply ensure that all connections are fresh. Any device that is not active will not be connected, but current registered devices will not be affected.
No. The list of printers is relevant for each user only. You may have some printers that are registered to every single user, but Accentis will generate an individual list of connected devices for each user. If this issue is occurring for multiple users, contact your IT support to implement the automated solution.
