Why is it slow to bring up a print dialogue box?

KB431

Overview

Occasionally, you may find that printing reports or opening the Printers manager (Users > Printers) causes your system to freeze for several minutes before displaying the Print Dialogue box.

This can be due to an excessive number of printer definitions in the Windows Registry.

Accentis will contact each of these devices in preparation for any one of them being selected, which results in a “not responding” status until every device is ready to print. If some of these connections are stale, this can take quite some time.

Solution

To resolve this issue, you will need access to the Windows System Registry. You must have authority and understanding of the Windows registry before making any changes.

Navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Devices

Clear out all connected devices in this location. Log out and back in again to trigger fresh connections to all of your devices.

NOTE: This solution will only affect the current user. If multiple users are experiencing the issue, you will need to either resolve this issue for each user or ask your IT team to implement the following permanent solution.

Involving your IT crew

If you want to resolve the issue automatically for all users, your IT team can implement the above change script on logoff of each user. Contact your IT team for assistance with this.
