One aspect of humanity that is constant throughout the world is time. Whether it’s measured by the sun, the seasons or by growth of trees, time is always passing. It’s a strange construct in that it is always moving forward, it’s constant, and it can’t be sped up, slowed down, reversed or stopped, despite promises to the contrary. Time is recorded by businesses through opening hours and staff work periods. You can thank Henry Ford, yes the car maker, for creating the 40 hour week as we know it. It wasn’t some lofty idea to be generous to his employees, it was enacted so that he gave his employees leisure time in which they would have time to drive, and therefore buy his motor vehicles. While time is used to measure how long an employee has to work during the week, it’s used as a tool to work out how much to pay them over these periods, and to forecast how much time is required to get jobs done in the future.
